For about 15 years or so I have considered myself Buddhist, although in the past 5 years have dabbled with some other traditions. Most of my Buddhist knowledge comes from more Theravada sources, as well as Tibetan (initially Tibetan Buddhist study then became more Theravada). Recently I have been trying to get into Taoism - I like the idea of "the Tao" as a supplement to traditional Buddhism - not quite God, but more of an underlying force of nature - nature itself. Anyways, I have come across some things that suggest Zen developed out of a fusion of Buddhism and Taoism when Buddhism traveled to China and beyond. I still struggle though to really know how Zen differs from other lines of Buddhism though - I know it is more about meditation and direct experience, less about textual learning like say Tibetan Buddhism can be - beyond that where is this fusion of Taoism and Buddhism? I mean, honestly, I don't see a ton of difference between Buddhism and Taoism anyways, unless talking about the later development of celestial bodies and whatnot in Taoism. Thoughts? Suggested readings?
