while its not a case, yuanwu brings up this interaction between t'ou tzu and joshu during tea time. (from the commenrary of case 41 in the bcr)
"One day T'ou Tzu spread the tea setting to entertain Chao Chou. T'ou Tzu himself passed some steamed rice cakes to Chao Chou, but Chou paid no attention. T'ou Tzu ordered his attendant to give the sesame cakes to Chao Chou. Chou bowed to the attendant three times. But say, what was his meaning? Observe how he always went right to the root to uphold this fundamental thing for the benefit of others."
this is a tough one for me! aside from joshus shit table manners during tea time, im not sure what to make of this. we dont even know if joshu accepts the fucking cakes after all this song and dance, but ultimately yuanwu thinks this encounter is enough to learn from as is.
questions i cannot answer in a satisfactory manner; 1. what is this fundamental thing being upheld in this interaction? 2. why does joshu not respond to t'ou tzu but he responds to the attendant? 3. who is the one going right to the root to uphold this fundamental thing for our benefit?
