When the Master took his leave, Nan-yan said, "Make a thorough study of the Buddha Dharma, and broadly benefit the world."
The Master said, "I have no question about studying the Buddha Dharma, but what is it to broadly benefit the world?"
Nan-yüan said, "Not to disregard a single being."
Do not disregard a single being. Avalokiteshvara has a thousand hands with a wisdom eye in each. Yet, still cries at the suffering of the world. Dongshan heard the preaching of the insentient, became a true companion, and has no question about studying the Buddha Dharma.
Shakyamuni Buddha, on his meeting the morning star said: “I together with all beings and the great earth attain the way.” Enlightenment is okay. Compassion is implicit. It opens us out and uses us all up.
How do you not disregard a single being?
