Where did you begin?

When did you begin?

When did you begin? The simplicity of the question obscures its subtleties. If you tell me a certain date or time, of course that isn’t it.

If I plucked you off your day job and dropped you of at the terminus, you wouldn’t appreciate me. It’s unlikely you’d make it. So you step back a little further and see that you began when you placed an order for a pair of shoes, or bought a sock, but that isn’t it either. Even further back when you decided to walk the path? You couldn’t have done that if not for the years of groveling in the dirt you did and made any progress now. Let this reasoning continue until it runs itself dry.

So where is the line you’re looking for? Where is the threshold you need to cross to truly say you’ve made even the first step? It’s called the Gateless Gate for a reason. It’s as though you’re an animal stuck in an incomplete pen, and the opening is behind you. Just look around and you’ll see. You can try to run into the fences all you’d like, but they’re electric. Good luck with that, my dude.

All this is explained plainly, but your legs won’t move. I’d move them for you if I could, but I can’t. I’ll give you a hint. Even if you were to put down your bag and shave off your mane, this doesn’t help in the slightest to ease your weight. All this does is make it easier for you to get a sunburn. Make yourself wild, do wild things. Curse the moon, punch hailstones out of the sky. Forget your own name, and find the path.

How do you know you’ve even started at all?
