I was thinking about ewk's excellent post from this morning, and amusing myself thinking about how this subreddit is a microcosm of the history of Zen.
First, Bodhidharma shows up to make an ass out of himself, repents, and runs off to the west to drink tea, or whatever. Then, for generations, people pick up his life's story and explore it, confusing themselves and others until they don't, being picked off and murdered by Buddhists and/or bandits.
Finally, the whole style is infiltrated and revised by wannabe self-help gurus, and people who want to start their own religion.
Those of us who are still interested in Bodhidharma have become a minority, while the bandits are still out there; only now they write more books and tell people not to read Bodhidharma.
Here on r/Zen, they vote brigade, abuse the report button, and spam the subreddit with topic-sliding posts and comments.
Don't challenge them! They'll abuse you in waves.
What I'm saying is that ewk is Bodhidharma.
Where was the boat notched? If you don't know, you'll have to swim to get the Patriarch's sword back in your Treasury.
