Background: Niutou was a meditation-worshipping heretical zombie, then 4th Zen Patriarch Daoxin came along and pointed to the True Zen Way™ by writing 'Buddha' on a rock.
A monk asked Dagui Zhenru, "How was Niutou before he met the Fourth Patriarch?"
Dagui replied, "Hair standing up in the cold."
The monk asked, "How about after meeting?"
Dagui replied, "Forehead breaking out in a sweat."
This "How has Niutou before...?" & "How was Niutou after...?" are common probing questions from passersby's presumably literate enough in the tradition to be familiar with the background. ZenMarrow has a few hits on this.
But staring at words and running off to 'meditate on it' is the provenance of carrion; not Zen. So: Did Dagui catch the same forehead sweat from Cuiyan as Niutou did from Daoxin or was it different?
