Tung-shan asked Yün-yen, "When I wish to meet you, what shall I do?"

"Make an inquiry with the chamberlain,"* replied Yün-yen.

Tung-shan said, "I am inquiring right now."

"What does he say to you?" asked Yün-yen.

^\"Chamberlain" was a title used during various dynasties, including the T'ang, for the court official who waited on the Emperor and served as an intermediary between him and the court nobility.)

What is “true meeting”? Dongshan wants to meet Yun-yen – but he’s right there! What’s he on about? Yun-yen throws out an invitation – “make an inquiry with the chamberlain.” So who is “the chamberlain”? Dongshan sees through it (maybe), saying “yea…that’s what I’m doing!” Yun-yen’s response is like a jump scare. This idea of “meeting” is important to Dongshan. This is early days for him. The best is yet to come.
