POINTER
Cease and desist; then an iron tree blooms with flowers. Is there anyone? Is there? A clever lad loses his profits; even though he is free in seven ways up and down and eight ways across, he cannot avoid having another pierce his nostrils. But tell me, where is his error? To test, I quote this to see.
CASE
As the officer Lu Hsuan was talking with Nan Ch’üan, he said, “Master of the Teachings Chao said, ‘Heaven, earth, and I have the same root; myriad things and I are one body.’ This is quite marvelous .''1
Nan Ch’üan pointed to a flower in the garden. 2
He called to the officer and said, "People these days see this flower as a dream." 3
NOTES
1. He's making a living in a ghost cave. A picture of a cake cannot satisfy hunger. This is also haggling in the weeds.
2. What is he saying? Bah! The scriptures have teachers of scriptures, the treatises have teachers of treatises: it's no business of a patchrobed monk. Bah! A powerful man in that instance would have uttered a turning word, and not only cut off Nan Ch’üan, but thereby cause all the patchrobed monks to show some energy.
3. When the mandarin duck embroidery is done, you may look at them, but do not give the golden needle away to anyone. Don't talk in your sleep! You have drawn the golden oriole down from his willow branch.
NOTES FROM AN 🦉
The Officer quotes an ancient sage pontificating on the nature of self and reality. Yet the statement, “This is quite marvelous”, gives him away.
What is so marvelous about old words? This is the statement of one who is idealizing the discourse of sages, taking their words and turning them around, like a child with a new toy.
Indeed it’s only because he hasn’t yet understood the truth within himself, that he keeps such statements at arms length and is able to venerate them.
A blind man in the feast hall dreaming of deserts.
Stop your senseless ideations, and turn your attention to the imminent reality at hand.
Wake up! Who has a turning word that can Stifle Nan Ch’üan and cause us all to display some energy?
