What if the road of mind is cut off? A bird does not mind.

Studying Chan requires passing through the barriers of the founding teachers; subtle enlightenment requires that the road of mind be cut off.

If the road of mind is not cut off, the barriers of the founding teachers are hard to pass through.

Do you want to succeed in cutting off the road of mind?  It requires not letting the inside out, not letting the outside in, being empty and clear.

If random thoughts occur, bring up a saying and keep it up, like wielding a diamond sword; keep it up coming and going over a long long time, and eventually in contact with the world, encountering conditions, you will naturally bite right through.

Then you will have an entry without needing to ask anyone.

Thief!

In order to master Zen, you must pass the barrier of the patriarchs. To attain this subtle realization, you must completely cut off the way of thinking.

Carry it [in this case 'No'] continuously day and night (...)

It will be just as if you swallow a red-hot iron ball, which you cannot spit out even if you try.

All the illusory ideas and delusive thoughts accumulated up to the present will be exterminated, and when the time comes, internal and external will be spontaneously united. You will know this, but for yourself only, like a dumb man who has had a dream.

Then all of a sudden an explosive conversion will occur, and you will astonish the heavens and shake the earth.

Faxian can't even come up with his own truth, and the diamond sword, ha, putting pictures in our minds making us feel like noble warriors wielding weaponry. Anything to motivate the kids!

Who now has fantasies about heroically reciting a mantra and glimpsing that thunderclap enlightenment at the sound of bamboo seeing its reflection in a river?

Besides, what good does all that do? Not letting outside in, holding nothing inside, where's the flavour, the zest? What's there to begin with to forge such a mighty sword? From how many sides can it be looked at?

A monk asked, "What about the mind is not perceived by the mind?"

The master [Zhaozhou] said, "Who is perceived?"

The monk said, "The self is perceived."

The master said, "There are not two."

The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Joshu #163, Green trans.

Like a bird pushed off the nest for the first time in its life, it drops into nothing, then it soars.

Those cut off roads won't hold it back.

Who can say something irrational to keep the foxes away from the eggs whilst everyone is out flying?
