A monk asked, "The clear moon is in the sky. It is not clear to me, what about the fact within the room?"1

The master said, "Ever since I left home, I have done nothing to earn a living."

The monk said, "In that case, you do not help the people of the world."

The master said, "I cannot save myself from my own ills; how could I save others from their ills?"

The monk said, "If you deal with my independence?"2

The master said, "If you are dependent, you walk on the ground. If you are not dependent, you can do with east and west as you please."

1. In other wrrds, "What is it to be a Ch'an (Zen teacher?)

2. Be without the help of others.
