A monk asked, "The clear moon is in the sky. It is not clear to me, what about the fact within the room?"¹

The master said, "Ever since I left home, I have done nothing to earn a living."

The monk said, "In that case, you do not help the people of the world."

The master said, "I cannot save myself from my own ills; how could I save others from their ills?"

The monk said, "If you deal with my independence?"²

The master said, "If you are dependent, you walk on the ground. If you are not dependent, you can do with east and west as you please."
