Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:
513 . Master Fahua Ju said to an assembly, Speaking of the gradual, it is countering the ordinary to conform to the Path; speaking of the sudden, it doesn’t leave any tracks. Even if you discern the sudden, you counter its norm—this is doing it by suppression.
.
(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: There are lots of intra-Zen discussions about sudden v. gradual (these aren't the debates from Buddhists about the importance of practices and refinements). There are also few references to gradual in Zen to begin with, which doesn't help any.
And then you have the translation problems.
So this quote should really clear things up.
