Buddhahood is attained when there is no mind which is to be used for the task.

The idea is that when every effort is put forward to achieve some task, and you are finally exhausted and have come to the end of your energy, you give yourself up as far as your conciousness is concerned.

In fact, however, your unconcious mind is still intensely bent on the work and before you realise it you find the work accomplished. " man's extremity is God's opportunity"

This is really what is meant by " to accomplish the task by no mind."

"Even when they are told that every being is endowed with the Buddha nature and that they are Buddhas, even as they are, they keep themselves from Buddhahood by reason of their own discriminative understanding, which creates an artificial barrier between themselves and Buddha.

Huinengs whole mission was to break down this barrier. "
