Because a monk asked, “What is Buddha?”
Zhimen said, “If you wear out your straw sandals you will walk barefoot.”
The monk said, “What is the matter of improvement (going beyond) on the Buddha?”
The master said, “The sun and moon fly from the top of the staff.”
This sort of talk...where will anyone sink their teeth into it? Even if you manage to grab a nibble or a small bite, it really is altogether flavorless! Ha, ha! Who can say something to attest to suns & moons flying from the staff?
A cautionary warning...we have generation after generation of Zen Master raising the law and putting strangers, old grannies, priests, kings, other Zen Masters on public trial and clearly weighing the matter in accordance with the Law. Church meditation-prayer circles and gradual practices of wisdom cultivation are just shooting at clouds with a water gun and pretending your prayers for rain have been answered, so, if you don't recognize that tradition of conversation-not-prayer--you haven't been studying Zen.
Oh! Here's another flavorless cake to cap this whole business off:
Oh, Chang is the bean cake,
And Lee is also the bean cake.
At night when you lay your head down upon your pillow,
A thousand thoughts may arise in your mind;
But when you awake in the morning,
You still continue to make the bean cakes.
What about any of this could be misconstrued as a prized dessert?
