The Real Shobogenzo: Real Bastard

Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:

491 .  When Dengyin Feng took leave of Mazu, Mazu said, “Where are you going?”  He said, “To Shitou.”  Mazu said, “The road of Shitou is slippery.”

Dengyin Feng said, “Bringing a pole with me, I’ll perform at whatever location I come upon.”  Then he left.

As soon as he reached Shitou, he circled the Chan seat once, planted his staff, and asked, “What doctrine is this?”  Shitou said, “Heavens, heavens!” Feng was speechless.

Feng went back and told Mazu about this.  Mazu said, “Go again, and when he says, ‘Heavens, heavens!’ you heave a couple of sighs.”

Feng went back and asked the same question; Shitou then heaved a couple of sighs.  Feng was again speechless.

He returned and related this to Mazu.  Mazu said, “I told you the road of Shitou is slippery!”

.

(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: Shitou was from Qingyuan, Qingyuan was from Huineng. Qingyuan was the teacher of the whole Caodong line, and thus a target for Dogen Buddhist apologetics which declare Quingyuan "not a real person".

One version of his first meeting with Master Qingyuan goes like this: The master asked, “Where have you come from?” Xiqian said, “From Caoxi.” The master asked, “What did you bring with you?” Xiqian said, “That which had never been lost even before I went to Caoxi.” The master said, “Then why did you go there at all?” Xiqian said, “If I hadn't gone there, how could I have realized that it had never been lost?” The master approved. Then Xiqian asked him, “Did you know the master of Caoxi?” The master said, “Do you know me now or not?” Xiqian said, “Though I might know you, how can I fully realize it?” The master then welcomed Xiqian into the community.

Imagine interviewing to get into a community. Heh heh. Anyway.

So Shitou is a slippery bastard. Tell me! Tell me! Why is that a virtue?
