Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:
Zhenjing: Haven’t you read how a monk asked Jianfeng, “For the Blessed Ones of the ten directions, there is one road to nirvana—where does that road start?” Jianfeng described a line with his staff and said, “Here.” What about this answer of Jianfeng—did he ever see, even in a dream? If it were me, I’d do otherwise. “For the Blessed Ones of the ten directions, there is one road to nirvana—where does the road begin?”—I’d strike the questioner across the back and ask him, “Where is the beginning of the road?” When he’s about to open his mouth, I’d shout him out.
Then there was this old broken-legged Yunmen, who didn’t distinguish the adept from the naive, did not distinguish true from false—holding up his fan, he said, “This leaps up to the thirty-third heaven and bumps into the nose of the emperor of gods; the carp of the eastern sea struck once with a cane, it rains buckets.” As for this kind of guy mixing in mud and water, in a pile of crap, what would be wrong with burying five or ten?
Ah, ha, ha! Happy? Enough? Now we’re fortunate to face the greening of the mountains; over the years this phenomenon is one time. Stop letting body and mind lazily be bound up—everyone better stop snoozing.
.
(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: Two minor details to notice here... first, Zhenjing can clearly quote Jianfeng and Yunmen from memory... and these references are a bit obscure. Second, Zhenjing's attitude about other famous Zen Masters isn't an artifact... it's typical Zen Master behavior.
People come into this forum and accuse us of "imitating Zen Masters"... but what does that mean, really? Being well read and irreverent? Since when is that a bad thing in literally any area of human culture? Maybe church, right? Or at least those churches that insist on absolutely conformity.
"Broken legged Yunmen" is pretty funny, considering Yunmen got his leg broken trying to get an interview with a Zen Master.
What road is Zhenjing complaining about, anyway?
