Mario Posecki, Religious Apologist, tries to take on Nanquan... trainwreck follows

From his section titled, "Issues and Incongruities" from "Killing Cats and Other Imaginary Happenings"

His arguments against Nanquan:

  • ethical questions about the behavior depicted in it, which tie up with the general understanding of the Chan school’s attitudes towards the monastic precepts and traditional Buddhist morality.

  • some of the problems arising from the purported introduction of radical teaching methods

  • issues related to the story’s textual provenance

Posecki declares both Wumen and Yuanwu to be misguided as he rushes headlong to his conclusion that Nanquan didn't chop the cat up because "Buddhism".

My favorite bit is that Posecki can't imagine that this Case has anything relevant to say about Zen.

...and PS, Posecki is a Theravada priest... so no agenda there that might suggest he is misguided.
