Gateless Gate #36 - Speaking Effectively

Wuzu said, "On the path meeting a realized person of the Way, do not use speech or silence to respond. Just say, what do you use to respond?”

Wumen says: If within you are able to respond intimately, you do not hinder happy celebrating. Maybe you are not yet like that? Still, each one must dwell closely to clearly see.

The Ode says

On the path meeting a realized person of the Way,

Do not use speech or silence to respond.

A fist obstructs the jaw and splits the face.

Directly fall into the meeting and casually meet together.

u/Nimtrix1849: One of the most interesting aspects of Zen Literature is their emphasis on being capable of having a conversation. Here's Foyan on "Speaking Effectively":

If someone should question you, how would you speak? Can you speak effectively? If you can only speak after thinking and concentrating, what use is your statement?

At midnight, how do you speak? Getting up at dawn, how do you speak? In the hallway, in the washroom, how do you speak?

Can you speak effectively? Your eyes must be clear before you can.

Wumen tells us not to use speech or silence. Why should we do as he says? Why shouldn't we do as he says? "Directly fall into the meeting and casually meet together."
