The Real Shobogenzo: Why speak of a transmission outside of doctrine?

Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:

According to the school of patchrobed monks, potential is presented in a phrase—it is a waste of effort to stand there thinking.  Even if you understand at a single statement, you are still snoozing.  

At that time a monk asked, “What is a single statement?”

Yunmen said, “Brought up.”

Dahui said, “Snoozer.”

(Welcome link) (ewk^who?) note: What if your single statement is a snoozer? These old foreigners are forever complaining about each other... to what end? Who do you complain about? Where are all the people practicing this "understanding at a single statement"? Did Yunmen understand, or did Dahui? They can't both be right.
