Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:
Zhenjing: Do you see? If you can see here, Shakyamuni folds his hands, Maitreya furrows his brow, Manjusri and Samantabhadra serve as attendants. If you do not see, watch me free in all ways, and get it within complications. Ha, ha, ha! Exalted worthies, tell me, what am I laughing at? Oh, I’m laughing at the firefly light and mosquito understanding of Yunmen, Linji, Deshan, and Yantou of olden times. One said, “When the great enlightened World Honored One was first born, he pointed to the sky with one hand, pointed to the earth with one hand, and said, ‘In the heavens above and on earth below, I alone am honored.’ If I had seen him at the outset I would have killed him with one blow and fed him to the dogs.” The likes of this bunch of thieving phonies are all just temporarily claiming honor where there is no Buddha. If they were called back now, I would start an inquisition of them at once.
.
(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: When people who aren't up to Zhenjing say "Zen", it nauseates me... like watching a rich man tell starving peasants he has buried a pearl in a mountain of shit so they will sift through it barehanded... when all along there was no pearl in there.
If you are interested, here is Zhenjing's story... his other name was Baofeng.
While spending the summer at Mt. Gui, Baofeng heard the story of a monk who asked Yunmen, “Isn’t the Buddhadharma like the moon reflected in water?”
Yunmen said, “The clear wave does not penetrate the Way.”
Baofeng, hearing this story, gained a great insight.
Baofeng later went to study under Huanglong, but he couldn’t grasp his teaching. Baofeng said, “I have some good points, but this old fellow doesn’t acknowledge them.” He then went to Xiangcheng, where he met with the monk Shun.
Shun asked, “Where did you come from?”
Baofeng said, “I came from Huanglong.”
Shun said, “What did Huanglong say recently?”
Baofeng said, “Recently the provincial governor asked Huanglong to assume the abbacy of Huangbo, and Huanglong thereupon offered this teaching: ‘Chanting adulation above the bell tower, planting vegetables below the platform. Someone offers turning phrases, then assumes the abbacy.’ And when he ascended the seat, he said, ‘A ferocious tiger sits on the road. A dragon goes to reside at Huangbo.’” [Huanglong's name means "yellow dragon."]
Without hesitating Shun said, “Assuming the seat, he offered a single turning phrase, and then he assumed the abbacy of Huangbo. But as for the Buddhadharma, he doesn’t even see it in his dreams.”
At these words Baofeng realized great enlightenment and finally understood Huanglong’s meaning. He then returned to Huanglong.
Huanglong said, “Where have you come from?”
Baofeng said, “I’ve come especially to pay you my respects.”
Huanglong said, “Right now I’m not here.”
Baofeng said, “Where have you gone?”
Huanglong said, “To do communal work at Mt. Tiantai. To go hiking on Mt. Nanyue.”
Baofeng said, “In that case, this student is in charge.”
Huanglong said, “Where have the sandals beneath your feet come from?”
Baofeng said, “Bringing the texts of seven hundred fifty songs from Mt. Lu.”
Huanglong said, “How did you get to be in charge?”
Baofeng pointed at his sandals and said, “How could I not be in charge?”
Huanglong was startled.
I don't object to people coming in here to correct me, don't I make mistakes like anyone else? There are people who come in here to teach me, though... afraid to AMA, afraid to open their eyes, they make up wild stories about Buddha and Dharma and Sangha.
None of them have ever startled anybody, least of all themselves.
I've taught them all! They now expect an Inquisition.
