Meditation.

When you practice mind-control (zazen or dhyana), sit in the proper position, stay perfectly tranquil, and do not permit the least movement of your minds to disturb you. This alone is what is called liberation."

"If you would spend all your time – walking, standing, sitting or lying down – learning to halt the concept-forming activities of your own mind, you could be sure of ultimately attaining the goal. Since your strength is insufficient, you might not be able to transcend samsara with a single leap; but, after five or ten years, you would surely have made a good beginning and be able to make further progress spontaneously."

T. O. M's comment..

I thought I would try a little meditation this morning. Just for a change.. I didn't do very long, but I had an insight into the nature of thought..

Before we get to the insight, I'll tell you how I meditate..

I do seated meditation that emphasises focus on the breath.. When I notice thoughts arising, I just calmly return to the breath, I'm not trying to suppress thoughts, but I'm just noticing them, I'm not feeding them with any energy, I'm just noticing them, then returning to the breath as a focus for my attention..

Anyway, after a while, I had the realisation, that i can't actually suppress thoughts, because thoughts don't have any substance, I can't suppress what isn't even there in the first place, I realised that what was happening during quiet periods of meditation was, in fact, that I am just not creating any thoughts..

The thoughts are created by me. So during quiet periods, I'm not suppressing thoughts, I'm just quiet, and as such, am able to connect with things in a more beneficial way..

Disclaimer.. These are just my opinions.. Don't mistake my own musings for teaching, they are food for thought, as much for myself, as for anyone else..
