Case 21 Yunmen’s Shit Sponge 二十一 雲門屎橛
雲門、因僧問、如何是佛。
Yunmen was asked by a Preceptor: "What is Buddha?"
門云、乾屎橛。
Men said: “A dried up shit-sponge.”
Buddha: A dried up shit-sponge...can't be used.
Lots of parishioners come in here and claim their church affirms such an understanding of Buddha. But, when questioned, preach about cultivating the shit-sponge lifestyle, drinking the wisdom-producing Buddha jenkem kool-aid, or practicing the posture of some old guy making brown over the privy...weird.
It displays not only a startling lack of basic literacy but often a continued insistence that some Priest in their church, surely(!), isn't a complete fraud.
! - An aside: it's increasingly looking like the Dogen/Hakuin Buddhism, at least in the US, is a cult franchisee system.
Mary Kay...but for aspiring cult-leaders. There is a 'brand' with a dress code, standard fare of 'prayer-meditation', minimalist aesthetic, and a loose reverence for Founder Dogen/Hakuin but the doctrines in the individual churches are vague enough for the Priest-Franchisee to do whatever they want and the parishioners themselves lack the integrity to lay out their doctrines publicly and address their incompatibility with Zen.
If any of the above is incorrect, AMA and clear up the air about what your church preaches.
