What is the Zen community’s stance between the middle path and pursuing good karma?

When I think about Jainism, and their “gold chain” philosophy, I always wonder exactly what Bhuddism’s stance on trying to do good, even though one knows it is futile is. Like, to me the idea that anybody would ever choose to have an evil alignment outside of playing a video game or being brutally traumatized has always seemed so silly! There would just always be more threats one would have to create in order to enjoy the thing it is obtaining by being evil in the first place. Zen to me seems even more neutral than the more fundamental bhuddists, so what would then be zen stance for behavior or mentality between the evil-neutral-good actions one should take in every day life?
