We need to use concepts, but not be deceived by them.
If we had no concepts, we would not be able to operate in the conventional world.
If we were to go and live in a forest in solitude for a length of time, I'm sure all concepts would cease, but we, well certainly I need to goto work and raise a family, so I need to talk to people conventionally.
In a lot of traditions, the student would spend a long time, in a monastery environment or in solitude, strengthening the root, the unconditioned mind, before venturing back into society, and being able to operate fully with a foot in both wolds, so to speak.
This is the hard part, for a serious zen student, to be able to mix the two parts, the conventional (the branch) and the unconventional (the root).
