I've read a lot of the Gateless Gate book of Koans, and have understood a lot of it quite deeply. I feel like this is some sort of realisation, but what do people say about having never worked out a Koan on my own? I feel like I don't need to, but then why is it normally part of the practice? Which leads me to think there must be a purpose to it, having attained a deeper realisation through having worked out Koans than through just reading them. On the other hand, many people come to realisation without their spiritual practice playing any part, so maybe it's not necessary to work them out? My logic is that for some people, they take a bit longer to get it so they need the process of solving the Koans in order to attain the same realisation as someone who will get it quicker without that process, simply because people's brains work in different ways. What do people think?
