“Of Ta-hui Tsung-kao (1089-1163), who became a strong advocate of kung-an, it is said that when he was a student under Master Yiian-wu K'e-ch'in (1063-1135) he was given the following kung-an to meditate upon: "The eastern mountain sails on the river." He made forty-nine attempts to come up with the right answer and failed utterly.”
I’d love to see a list of those wrong answers. Anyone think they know what Ta Hui missed?
