What are koans, exactly?
Would it be accurate to characterize them as stories?
If so, do they function differently than other stories? (like the Christian bible or Buddhist texts)
This is not some clever riddle, I am just looking to understand where koans fit within the broad context of literature.
For example I was listening to a nice conference that analyzed the psychological significance of religious stories, and I wondered whether koans would fit in this category or not.
