"Don't take having concerns as not having concerns; time and time again concern is born of unconcern." -- Master Yen of Wu Tsu

"[Text continues]...If you can immerse yourself in this and penetrate through, you will see that Kuei Shan and Iron Grindstone Liu acting in this way [Insulting each other] is the same sort as ordinary people's conversation. People are often hindered by the words, that's why they don't understand. Only an intimate acquaintance can understand them thoroughly." Blue Cliff Record, Shambala 2005 pg.161

I admit I didn't get this one on first reading.

The two mentioned above are the focus of case#24 in the BCR, where they trade insults with each other. Kuei Shan calls Liu "an old cow" and she invites Shan to a dinner party 600 miles away (lol). Shan lays down like a corpse and Liu exits.

Yuan Wu, the one I believe who organized the BCR, wrote,

"It's that she knows there is something transcendent, that's why she acts like this.

Something transcendent! Well that shut me up. Then the light bulb turned on. THESE TWO ARE FRIENDS AND LOVE EACH OTHER.

Some of my best friends growing up are various ethnicities and nothing gave us more satisfaction than calling each other the worst racial epithets in our vocabulary. We did it to show each other we loved them. The transcendent something is love.

Who knew these zen firebrands were big softies?
