Anderl's Patriarch's Hall: Another guy from India pnwns "contemplating stillness"

Anderl's 祖堂集 Zutang ji, Patriarch's Hall Collection, https://terebess.hu/zen/Zutangji.html

Tripitaka master Juéduo succeeded to the Sixth Patriarch. The master was a person from India. When he arrived at the Li village in the Dingxiäng district of Täiyuån he saw a disciple of Grand Master Xiü (i.e. Shénxiü) who had patched grass into a cottage; sitting there alone in meditation, he contemplated his mind.

The master asked: "What are you doing'?" [The disciple] answered: "Contemplating on stillness.'

The master said: 'The one who contemplates - what person is this'? Stillness - what is this'?" The monk then stood up and bowed, asking: "How is this principle, I beg you to instruct me!"

The master said: "Why don't you see (contemplate) for yourself'? Why don't you stay calm for yourself ? The monk was unable to answer. The master saw that his basic nature was hesitant and so he said: "Who is your teacher'? " [The student] answered: "Preceptor [Shén]Xiü. " The master said: "Does your master only teach this method or does he also have other teachings'?' [The student] answered: "He just taught me to contemplate stillness."

The master said: 'The teaching (dharma) which is practiced in India by inferior heretics is regarded as the Chån school in this land. You greatly mistaken person! '

The monk said: "Who is the master of yours ? The master said: "The Sixth Patriarch. ' He said furthermore: "The right dharma is difficult to encounter why don't you go there'? " The monk obeyed the master' s admonition (suggestion) and subsequently went to Cåoxä where he paid a formal visit to the Sixth Patriarch and gave an account of the above matter.

The Sixth Patriarch said: "If it really is as Juéduö said why don't you see (contemplate) for yourself why don't you stay calm for yourself'? Whom shall one instruct to calm you ?" Through these words the monk became utterly enlightened."

(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: Couple of interesting things here...

  1. "Contemplating stillness" meditation is inferior, and comes from India.
  2. Such practices do not help with enlightenment.
  3. Why do people depend on practice to achieve stillness, to see themselves?

We've had different, less detailed versions of this Case before somewhere...
