Contrary to..... Hmmmm... I was going to say popular belief, but maybe I would be better to say, the belief that is espoused the loudest and most bullishly by a few on this site, it appears that zen masters actually do , do zazen..
I'm reading Bankei.. Bankei resolved at a young age to attain, in his words, " the bright virtue." Bankei retreats into the mountains and spends long months or years ( there is no mention of the exact amount of time) meditating, and using ascetic practices.. Bankei falls ill. He has a long and severe illness, from which he thinks he is going to perish.. However, in the midst of this illness, he is suddenly enlightened..
So, there you have it folks, the next time anyone tells you, zen masters don't do zazen, just refer em towards good old Bankei..
