Shakyamuni Buddha’s “Discourse of the Eye” with the Venerable Subhuti, Master of Emptiness (The fact that everything exists within a relationship of subject and object), and the Emptiness of Emptiness

From the Diamond-Cutter Scripture

Two small notes;

  • Subhuti literally translates to “Good Existence.”
  • This is my go-to passage for sutra copying meditation.

Buddha -

“Venerable Subhuti, past thoughts cannot be found. Present thoughts cannot be found. Future thoughts cannot be found.”

“Venerable Subhuti, if a noble son or daughter were to renounce their karma for as many times as there are grains of sand in the great river Ganges, for as many world-cycles as there are grains of sand in the great river Ganges, then these individuals could be recognized as spiritual liberators.”

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Buddha possess a physical eye?”

Noble Subhuti -

“Yes, the Buddha possesses a physical eye. It is as you say, Lord.”

Buddha -

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Buddha possess a divine eye?”

Noble Subhuti -

“Yes, the Buddha possesses a divine eye. It is as you say, Lord.”

Buddha -

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Buddha possess a Dharma eye?”

Noble Subhuti -

“Yes, the Buddha possesses a Dharma eye. It is as you say, Lord.”

Buddha -

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Buddha possess a wisdom eye?”

Noble Subhuti -

“Yes, the Buddha possesses a wisdom eye. It is as you say, Lord.”

Buddha -

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Buddha possess a Buddha, or 100% and irreversibly awakened eye?”

Noble Subhuti -

“Yes, the Buddha possesses the Buddha eye. It is as you say, Lord.”

Buddha -

“Venerable Subhuti, do I not speak of grains of sand as grains of sand?”
