Case 28. Hekiganroku. What the Holy ones have not preached.

Nansen came to see osho.

Osho said, "is there any dharma that the Holy ones have not preached?"

Nansen said, " there is."

Osho said, " what is the dharma that has not been preached to the people?"

Nansen said" it is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not things "

Osho said,"you have preached."

Nansen said, " I am like this, how about you?"

Osho said, " I am not a man of great wisdom, how can I tell if there is preaching or no preaching?"

Nansen said " I don't follow you.

Osho said," I have talked quite enough for you"

Notes. (katsuki Sekida)

There is a saying in zen, truth cannot and should not be preached. One must learn for oneself and master it for oneself. But if this is so. Why do so many people go on talking about zen? This is an old question. And the answer is obvious. In the most fundamental sense, from the view point of the first principle of zen, talking about zen is nonsense. But to initiate the novice, it is absolutely necessary to talk about it..

My notes.

Are we all here as novices, looking to initiate ourselves?

Are some of us here, trying to be masters, wanting to show off our learning and initiatite others?

Are we all here as a sangha? At some times wise? at other times foolish, or someplace in between, trying to learn from, and help one another?
