Yunmen: Spooky Staves

Source: "Essential Sayings" of Yunmen; Urs App

Having entered the Dharma Hall for a formal instruction, Master Yunmen said: "The Bodhisattva [Vasubandhu] has transformed himself quite pointlessly into this wooden staff."

Then he drew a line on the ground with his staff and said, "All ye buddhas, countless like grains of sand, go ahead, entangle yourselves in words in here!"

With this the Master left is seat.

When I first came to Zen, this is the shit I tended to avoid. I would read it over, have an inkling of an understanding about ... something, and then ... shrug my shoulders and give in to a smothering blanket of doubt and pour over Huangbo for the N'th time.

Now though, I adore this shit.

It's still the same thing as what Huangbo said ... just condensed.

Mind you, this was Yunmen's formal instruction!

Where is the doctrine? Where is the seriousness? Where is the meditation? Where is the "formal instruction"? lmfao
