Sayings of Joshu #145 (No self? Then who are you lying to?)

A monk asked, "When the mind does not probe the mind - what is that like?"

Joshu said, "Whom are you probing?"

The monk said, "The self."

Joshu said, "There are not two."

"No self" has sometimes seemed, to me, like some better self I might become by "letting go" of this or that. Maybe a little like a bear trying to skin itself because it wants a new rug. Less self importantly, maybe a little like getting a new haircut (which I always find very exciting).
