We all know that this is just a formality at this point, but I've been told that it must be done to keep me accountable or something. I mean, I respect that. I'll do my best to attempt sincerity and answer questions non-rhetorically.
Not Zen? (Repeat Question 1) Suppose a person denotes your lineage and your teacher as Buddhism unrelated to Zen, because there are several quotations from Zen patriarchs denouncing seated meditation. Would you be fine saying that your lineage has moved away from Zen and if not, how would you respond to being challenged concerning it?
My lineage hasn't moved away from Zen as such but you can't deny that I've put my own personal flair on things. My background is in things like pure mathematics and esoteric Buddhism. I'm not saying I'm a mathematician or an esotericist or a Buddhist, but I like metaphor and analogy so that is why it sometimes comes out that way.
As for my teacher, well... This one can't be taught a fucking thing anymore, but I have nothing but respect for those that came before. They know who they are, shouts out!! and all that shit.
Uh, just another formality but it goes without saying that 'seated meditation' is Not Zen. I mean, which Zen Master said to practice meditation? I can't think of one, can you?
What's your text? (Repeat Question 2) What text, personal experience, quote from a master, or story from zen lore best reflects your understanding of the essence of zen?
Fuck sake. Which part of the memo did you miss? Not dependent on words or letters. Not dependent on personal experiences either. I've said a few things: check my twitter if you want to see at 88mantra.
Dharma low tides? (Repeat Question 3) What do you suggest as a course of action for a student wading through a "dharma low-tide"? What do you do when it's like pulling teeth to read, bow, chant, sit, or post on r/zen?
Really? OK, fine. Look, I studied Zen for almost eight years before I started to make any headway. If you've only been trying to look for a little while and you're frustrated because you can't get your hands on this here Sword, don't get upset, don't get mad. Like, I'm sure you'll get there eventually if you just keep plowing on straight ahead. Get where? I didn't say a word.
A fallen flower can't be reattached.
Once a mirror is shattered,
It can never be made clear again.
But a Sword that never dulls,
Is a very precious relic indeed.
