Once, when Master Yunmen had finished a talk, he stood up, banged his staff on his chair, and said, "With so many creeping vine words up to now, what place will I be banished to? Sharp ones understand, but many are being completely fooled by me."
Then he said, “Putting frost on top of snow.”
Yunmen Wenyan [864-949]

Commentary and questions: A question cuts everything into two, and an answer blasphemes the essence of the Dharma. This Yunmen was good with offering yellow leaves, but he should have stopped at banging his staff on the chair. Now I ask, why is that? There's nothing there for you.
Creeping vine words can lead to conceptual entanglements, but one such as Yunmen could never be banished. How can someone catch a ghost who is only speaking of shadows and fog? And how does one go about putting frost on top of snow? What an old devil and silver-tongued charlatan this Yunmen was!
