Once the Southern Han Emperor Gaozu summoned Master Yunmen to the capital for an audience.
The Emperor asked, "What is Zen all about?"
Master Yunmen said, "Your Majesty has the question, and your servant the monk has the answer."
The Emperor inquired, "What answer?"
The master replied, "I request Your Majesty to reflect upon the words your servant just uttered."

Commentary and questions: Just who is this Emperor asking the questions, and who is this servant providing the answers? To look elsewhere other than mind is not the path, for you'll always be lead astray. What is this doubt in the mind that mires one in not understanding?
Here the Emperor asked a question, not understanding the answer already given from the servant as he spoke. What a grand oversight! Yunmen certainly saw it, and revealed the path at once.
