What Can I Do? Inciting My Own Cases

I hope to have one of these exercises written for every koan I read. I'm up to Gateless Barrier 10 right now.

After I've had enough of koan reading I will be (probably massively) revising this to calibrate for concreteness. Ideally in the end it will be about Zen but none of you will recognize it. But the traces certainly remain for now.

Here's the ten I have, grab em while they're hot

What Can I Do? Inciting My Own Cases

1. Seize an opportunity to reject a comprehensive, inescapable binary.
   a. Consider what happens,
   b. to see how it is possible.
2. Notice ways to reject cause and effect without just dying
   a. When I’m supposed to cause, be affected
   b. When I’m supposed to be affected, cause
3. Before communicating, remove the means of communication
   a. What can be communicated this way?
   b. How does this activity change my understanding of what is communicated?
4. Engender an insight by asking a question presuming a falsehood
   a. What was the falsehood?
   b. What was the insight?
5. In a double bind, with no way forward,
   a. Consider the way forward
   b. Determine what I’m holding onto that creates the double bind
6. Be incongruous by being responsive
   a. Without referencing this exercise, why did I respond?
   b. Assert there is no incongruity. Consider how this can be?
7. Continue on without understanding.
   a. Remind someone that nothing means what it means.
   b. Take note of a time I do not do so.
8. Fall down or fall apart
   Notice times when I am undone
   Describe what I do without negating the undoneness posited in a)
9. Proceed headforth through an illusion without piercing the illusion
   a. Don’t wait, act while the illusion creates around me
   b. When I change the way I move or the way I rest, what happens in the illusion?
10. Look for an instant in which I make a request
    a. How does my self-conception shape the request? What would the request look like without it?
    b. Find the riches inherent in but locked away by the request per a) above. Describe my request as a quarrel over these riches.
