Two Hermits

Jōshū went to a hermit’s hut and asked, “Anybody in? Anybody in?” The hermit thrust up his fist. Jōshū said, “The water is too shallow for a ship to anchor.” Thereupon he left. Again he went to a hermit’s hut and asked, “Anybody in? Anybody in?” The hermit, too, thrust up his fist. Jōshū said, “Freely you give, freely you take away. Freely you kill, freely you give life.” He made a profound bow.

Koalazen: two hermits one and the same.

A profound bow, for what?

Take what’s yours and leave.

Maybe you will find a little freedom, but for what use? I’d rather not mention it.

I’m an old man now, just let me enjoy life on this internet forum.

I see all beings as my children.

If I find a son I will give my house.

I will leave without a single regret, without a question. This was a nice run.

Just don’t be clumsy and lazy like me.

Don’t let this die.
