One day Mazu asked Baizhang, "Where are you coming from?"
Baizhang replied, "From the other side of the mountain."
Mazu asked, "Did you meet anyone?"
Baizhang said, "No, I didn't."
Mazu asked, "Why didn't you meet anyone?"
Baizhang said, "If I did, I would have told the Venerable."
Mazu asked, "Where did you get this news?"
Baizhang said, "It is my fault."
Mazu said, "No, it is this old monk's fault."
Nanquan set off together with Guizong and Mayu to go to pay their respects to National Teacher Nanyang. While on the road, Nanquan stopped, drew a circle on the road, and said, "If you can say something, we will continue."
Guizong sat in the circle; Mayu bowed as a woman. Nanquan said, "Then we don't go."
Guizong asked, "What kind of thought is that?"
Nanquan took them back, and they did not go to pay their respects to the National Teacher.
Once, while Mayu was walking in the mountains together with Danxia, he saw a fish in the water. He pointed to Danxia.
Danxia said, "Natural. Natural."
The next day Mayu asked Danxia, "What did you mean yesterday?" Danxia lay down on the ground. Mayu said, "Heavens!"
People want to talk about their painted circles and try to bring up the "beauty of imperfection", "the void" or whatever. Luckily, that has nothing to do with it.
When Nanquan brought up the circle his purpose was distinct and clear. Guizong and Mayu met the sword with a sword.
As for the issue of Mayu & Danxia, what can an old country bumpkin shouting out his name in the mountains be met with?
