The earlier generations furnish many examples of incurring defeat in the process of studying Zen and doing meditation work. You have heard them again and again, to the point that they have been spoiled through becoming overly familiar.
You do not in the least consider them urgent or important. Now I am adding more mud on top of dirt. If you find those examples or this example to be without benefit, you must go forward on your own, Zen man, and not retreat.
Just be able to apply your spiritual energy with bold lucidity. At all times, in all places, let go but don't let [this energy] be cut off. If the delusion that's been there of itself for such a long time is cut off for a moment, then you fall into emptiness, to haunt the fields and forests.
As it is said, "If you are temporarily absent, you are like a dead person."
Why wait till the last day of your life?
The great being polishes a brick, his eyes paralyzed
As he goes back, we call in a loud voice to wake him up
What a scene of beating the cart instead of the horse!
For no reason it has been wrongly entrusted to the horse's colt
/r/Zen: Urgent Business!
Citation: Zhaozhou's"Fire! Fire!"
How will anyone not let this energy be cut off?
