Up in the teaching hall, Stone River said:
"Before the day of enlightenment, you meet him everywhere. When I ask, why do you say you do not know?"
"After the day of enlightenment, every beat is the imperative. When I ask, why do you say you do not understand?"
"On the day of enlightenment, dragons and snakes are easy to distinguish, patchrobed monks are hard to deceive."
Stone River held up his first and said, "What is in my hand? You better study it."
As he entered the temple, Stone River pointed to the temple gate and said:
"Putting to rest all outside entanglements, there is no road for mental constructs. Entering the gateless gate, three steps more than in former days."
He gave a shout and said, "The spirit tracks are not where the monkey howls."
On the tian-ji festival, Stone River went up to the teaching hall and said:
"An inconsequential monk, I ascend to this precious seat. Using empty space as a mouth, and the myriad forms as a tongue, I lecture on the Chapter on Lifespan of the Benevolent King. I am afraid the lecturing masters will hear of this and think I am infringing on their trade and stealing their business."
"But for now, let me explain the title."
Stone River hit the meditation bench with the whisk and said:
A snap of the fingers: Zen has no private tune
All are sounds for a thousand autumns,
for ten thousand years
People who rely on 'I understand it' or 'I don't understand it' when questioned are both ten-thousand miles away. This business with the hand though, how will you study it?
Also, can we all acknowledge Shiqi's smack talk for a moment?
"I am afraid the lecturing masters will hear of this and think I am infringing on their trade and stealing their business."
Followed up by:
"Zen has no private tune"
Try to whistle that one in Dogen's Dojo or Hakuin's Hall.
