A Tune Beyond the Clouds, Fifth Excerpt

Seeing off the Taoist master Li, Shiqi gave this verse:

Carefully investigating the five thousand words of the Dao De Jing

Each and every word is taught in your house

If you want to know the most abstruse meaning

It's facing you, neutral and pure: there is nothing else at all

Up in the teaching hall Shiqi said:

"Buddha Dharma and worldly dharma are pulled over onto one side. The meaning of the Zen patriarchs and the meaning of the scriptural teachings are leaning against a wall. But it has been raining for a long time without clearing: Where will patchrobed monks put their leather coats to dry?"

Shiqi pointed with his whisk and said:

"Nowhere."

The most abstruse meaning is facing you; there is nothing else at all.

As for where to put ones leather coats to dry, I say that Shiqi's head was already rolling around the teaching hall floor when he pointed with his whisk.

Tell me though, without falling into the provisional and the nominal, where is there the place to put your leather coats to dry?
