The work that you put into finding your true self is enlightenment

A reflection on zen Buddhism by nayogen senzaki - A Chinese Zen-poet, Kanzan, wrote a poem which expresses an ideal of man—in the viewpoint of Buddhism in general. The translation reads as follows: Be a man, a real man. Do everything neatly and accurately. Hold your mind like a great iron wall against all evil thoughts. Just one road for you—that is the road of bodhi. Walk ahead on this road without hesitation. Do not take the wrong road. If you do, you will suffer. Do not yearn to become Buddha. Meet your own true self. There is nothing new in describing a manly man, but we have to take notice of two points. First: we do not recognize sin and punishment in the way the Western religions do. No God or gods will punish us for our wrongdoings. We believe in the law of cause and effect. Whatever we sow, we have to reap by ourselves. The ethical aspect of Buddhism is based on clear understanding, not on make-believe. When we find our true self, we realize our mission in life, yet, if we take a wrong road, we must go back to the right one, paying in time and toil to regain the lost part. This striving may be called punishment by some, but for us, it is a part of bodhi which means “wisdom” or “the true path of man.” A Buddhist is also subject to the law of causation or the law of cause and effect of this world, just the same as anyone else, but for him, every struggle, every trouble, and even every pain of his life is for the develop- ment of his own buddhahood. Step by step, he is coming nearer to the true emancipation, nay, he is paying his tributes to the prajñā-pāramitā which is the work of true wisdom. Second: we are Buddhists, but we do not worship Buddha. Buddha was a teacher. We owe him a great deal for his noble thought, but we can- not depend on him for our own emancipation. One cannot open the inner eye merely by praying “Buddha” or calling Buddha’s name. You must get realization through your own striving. Buddha does not save you. You must save yourselves. Zen students always say, “Do not follow Tathāgata, just stand up yourself,

if you are a real man.” Zen Buddhism is a very rational, non-sentimental, purely intellectual religion. No poetical dreams are allowed in Zen Bud- dhism. The only way to enter Zen is to catch alive your own true self, and stay alive with it.

Comments by - Joel pfeiffer Everything anyone will talk about on here will be called false because everyone here wants their own ideas to be the only truth their is.wo it does make it pointless to all about.because everyone's personal veiws will be forced on everyone no matter what anybody will do.how can we believe anything but our own hearts truth. Maybe beyond only means beyond your perception of thoughts , feelings and believes.beyond the control of separation .nothing has to be controlled or changed or separated because society that humans created will always do this for us. beyond society's ideas of rite and wrong and what society tells us to believe to want and love and hate.any judgement and saying anything is wrong or rite is forcing believes and is a type of mind control.so will we ever be beyond human made concepts probably not.i do not want any answers or forced ideas placed on me unless I except the ideas myself.all the words I read here and everywhere feels rotten because it is always about acting superior to some one else their is no pure motive .all corrupted words.

I'm just saying that anyone thinks their beliefs are truth's but to someone else they are lies .so basically we define truth and lies personally and alot of zen writing comes from that one zen masters own personal truth's that he believes in.look at what is some ones individual style that is the truth.the mind can be clouded by judgment but the heart always knows what it wants to say.

Nepotism fascism everything will only chain our minds down to the ground.forced rules forced teaching forced learning  forced hating are inception to control the free mind and all that is conditions forced on our free minds.free will  free from word chains I do not come here to be enslaved or conquered. oceans tide lines in the sand keeping you away from the truth.

the key to life is taking a shit and walking away and then know all questions and comments about shit are just admirers of shit.
