The Real Shobogenzo: A Buddhist debates a Zen Master - Sutra Study Challenge!

Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo:

This is a piece of a debate on various Buddhist doctrines, but the one in question here is whether or not non-sentient inanimate beings are enlightened, and whether they expound the dharma. The Buddhist is at a tremendous disadvantage because of all the contradictions in the sutras, and the Zen Master knows them all... but that's not the end of it:

The monk said, “[If the earth itself is a Buddha and] If all beings live on the body of Buddha [the earth], then they befoul the body of Buddha with excrement, they excavate and tread upon the body of Buddha. How could there be no wrongdoing?”

[National Teacher Zhong] said, “The totality of beings is Buddha; who do you want to consider at fault?”

The monk said, “Scripture says the body of Buddha is unobstructed; now you take compounded solid things to be the body of Buddha—doesn’t this contradict the holy teaching?”

The teacher said, “The major scripture on transcendent insight says you cannot speak of the uncompounded apart from the compounded. Do you believe form is empty?”

The monk said, “It is the true word of Buddha—how could I not believe?”

The teacher said, “If form is empty, how could there be any obstruction?”

.

(Welcome) ...ewk note: While all that is fun and stuff, what about Zhaozhou's sincere man expounding a false doctrine to make it true, or an insincere man expounding a true doctrine to make it false? Does that ruin the fun? Given that the sutras are crowd-sourced folk wisdom, and not the true words of the Buddha, you are bound to get into trouble. Still, couldn't the National Teacher say anything and never get into trouble?

Who are you going to believe? Me, or your own eyes? -C. Marx.
