Case 34: Xuefeng’s Turtle-Nosed Snake

Xuefeng entered into the hall and said, “In South Mountain there is a turtle-nosed snake. All of you should really go have a good look.” Changqing went out and said, “Today in the hall there was one person who lost both his body and hist life.” Yumen took his staff and flung it in front of Xuiefeng, with a gesture as of fright. There was a monk who raised this with Xuansha Shibei (835-908) who said, I”It may be that elder broth Leng Changqing is like this, but I am not.” The monk asked, “What do you say, Master?” Xuansha said, “Why make use of ‘South Mountain?” (See BCR#22)

Poem:

The old man of Xianggu Mountain (Xuefeng) was instructing his followers,

When he paused to deliberate, he received a mouthful from another.

The glory of spring time suddenly burst out and startled everyone,

But unable to avoid the tip of his own sword, he wounded his hand.
