If you know one word of perfect reason, why seek to chew on writings?

Yuanwu:

Beita had investigated to this point, but later people just stick to the skin and miss the bone.  In the old days Yunmen’s saying about the North Star and Zhimen’s saying about the substance of insight were widely discussed in the communities, but people nowadays may hear a phrase or so and think nothing of it.

...

One word or one statement of the people of old would turn ordinary people into sages, transmuting iron into gold.   As it is said, even if you pulverize your bones and shatter your body, that’s not enough recompense; when one statement is clear, you transcend a billion.

Baizhang:

don’t seek intellectual understanding of meanings and expressions. Understanding is in the province of desire, and desire turns into disease. Right now just detach from all things, existent or nonexistent, and even detach from detachment. Having passed beyond these three phases, you will naturally be no different from a Buddha. Since you yourself are Buddha, why worry that the Buddha will not know how to talk. Just beware of not being Buddha.

...

To be greedily fond of knowledge and understanding of meanings and expressions is like a mother loving her child - she only gives the child a lot of refined milk to drink, without knowing at all whether the child can digest it or not.
