A pile of rocks

Walking along the coast one afternoon in Spring, Shinzen was deep in contemplation about a particular dilemma in his work when he came upon a young man wading in the shallows amongst the breaking waves. His peasant clothing was wet and he appeared to be moving rocks that he found from under the surf - some quite large and others very small - into a pile that barely reached his knees.

From his distance Shinzen called out to the man, “Why are you making a pile of rocks when the waves will surely knock it down?”

The young man dropped a grain of sand into the water as a wave rolled back and joined the ocean. He replied, “How else can a pile of rocks be made?”
