Sometimes I see established Zen teachers and advanced students of meditation who consider songs and verses to be leisure pursuits and consider composition to be a trivial matter.(7) They spit out whatever they feel, and in many cases their works are similar to vulgar sayings. (8) Composed on impulse, they are just like common talk. (9)

These people say of themselves that they are not concerned by coarseness and are not picky about grubbiness; they are thus trying to suggest that theirs are words beyond worldly convention, advertising them as hearkening back to ultimate truth. (10) The knowledgeable laugh in derision when they read them, while fools believe in them and circulate them. (11) They cause the principles of names to gradually disappear, and add to the growing weakness of the doctrinal schools.(12)

Have you not seen the tens of thousands of verses of the Flower Ornament Scripture and the thousands of poems of the Zen masters? Both are profuse and vivid, with elegant language; all of them are refined and pure, without padding. They are hardly the same as imitation of worldly customs with all their fripperies.(13)

For writing to be a pathway in later times and true in the mouths of the multitudes, it is still necessary to study precedents, and then it is essential to suit it to the occasion.(14) If you happen to have little natural ability, then you should be natural and content with simplicity; why pretend to genius or aspire to intellectual brilliance?(15)

If you spout vulgar inanities, you disturb the influence of the Way. Weaving miserable misconceptions, you cause trouble. Unconvincing falsehoods will increase later disgrace. (16)

Every master sings their own tune.

They do it to reflect or point towards truth. There is substance bind what they say, not randomness.

Some prefer stability others fluidity.

Various types of cultivations and traps within the evolution of concepts.

Again, the Zen masters aren't random. They do not speak arbitrarily.

Those who want to show off their eloquence, creativity, mystery...poets who desire to only express their vanity.

They compose a mixture of 'Zenish' sayings together in order to excuse their own immaturity as people, seeking only to entertain and be entertained.

They imagine that a spontaneous clever bit of word play is something special. It is not.

They want everyone to revert back to the maturity of grade schoolers...because that is where they are emotionally and intellectually as people.

If you are not here to study the texts...why are you here? Many here just want the name 'Zen' for themselves.

If you want to study Zen...why not look to see what kind of lessons or ideas it comes with? Study, reflect, discuss...see where the study may take you along the various forms of 'understanding' people go through with time.
