"Vast emptiness, with nothing dignity therein."
A couple five minutes ago somebody was complaining about how I use to be dignified, but me or the forum or both have really gone downhill or something.
That was never five minutes just now.
Setting aside the fact that this complaint has always been made about /r/zen or me or both, let us return once again to the matter of Nanquan's cat.
Where was the dignity in that, exactly? Mighty Nanquan, who brushed of Mazu, standing with an ax in hand and blood all over his robe. Where do you get off pretending that there is dignity in that?
I'm not just picking on Nanquan, because the lack of dignity in Zen is frickin' everywhere. Can I say frickin'? Huineng sneaking away with the robe and bowl at night? Dongshan humiliating some old guy to death in public, an old guy who had lived a life of service to his community? The veritable boatload of old people slapping, whacking, and beating those around them knowing that status prevents retaliation? Yunmen talking smack about kicking Buddha's ass? Wumen wasn't even the Zen Master of the monastery where he wrote Gateless Barrier... he was just a head monk showing off.
It's like "nothing holy" doesn't penetrate with some people... if there isn't anything holy, there isn't anything dignified either.
If Yunmen says that Buddha is a stick for wiping your ass, then dignity is your poopy butt. Mine. Especially yours. If you insist on studying with dignity, then you are in the wrong forum. GTFO.
Try /r/buddhism. They've got a shitload of holy over there.
