Meta: What is Caodong/Soto Zen? Buddhism? What are the roots of the /r/Zen conflicts?

  1. Zen is the name for Bodhidharma's lineage. https://old.reddit.com/r/zensangha/wiki/getstarted

    • Caodong is a branch of that lineage.
    • Soto is another name for Caodong.
  2. Western Dogen Buddhists claim to be "Soto Zen", but this both historically untrue and doctrinally dishonest.

    • Dogen Buddhists have a bible called FukanZazenGi, written by Dogen, that is based on a doctrine of "practice-enlightenment".
    • Dogen Buddhists practice Zazen prayer-meditation, which they believe is the only way to manifest Buddhahood.
    • Zen, Bodhidharma, and Caodong/Soto Zen all reject religious practices and bibles, meditation as a means to enlightenment, and messiahs.
  3. Dogen Buddhists have repeatedly tried to content brigade this forum, relying general ignorance and public misconceptions.

    • Dogen Buddhists continue to refuse to AMA in this forum about their faith, messiah, and religious texts.
    • Dogen Buddhists refuse to address the history of vote and content brigading, insults, and their failure to start a forum related to their religion.
  4. Dogen Buddhists are very traditionally Buddhist in their doctrine:

    • Dogen Buddhists claim to follow the 8FP
    • Dogen Buddhists claim to take the precepts literally, and seriously.

There has been an explosion of fury in the forum this week as new Dogen Buddhists showed up, started content brigading (whether out of ignorance or not) and were cheered on by returning Dogen Buddhist who had previously been humiliated out of this forum after blatantly violating the Reddiquette, the 8FP, and the precepts.

Again, anybody who is sincere in this forum should AMA about their religion and honestly engage the community about doctrinal and historical questions.

If you can't do that, you can't complain that there is any other problem than you.
